October Is National Physical Therapy Month — Here's Why That Matters to Us (And to You)

By: Laura Tallman, PT, DPT, CMTPT, CSCS, CKTP

Every October, the physical therapy community pauses to celebrate something we live and breathe 365 days a year: the power of movement, and the people who help restore it. National Physical Therapy Month is a chance to recognize the profession — but for us, it's really a chance to talk about why we do this work, and why we built Opal the way we did

PT Isn't Just for "After" — It's for Before, During, and Instead Of

One of the most persistent myths about physical therapy is that it's a last resort — something you do after surgery, after an injury, after your doctor runs out of other options. We'd love to retire that idea.

Physical therapy is just as powerful before a problem becomes a crisis:

  • Prevention — building strength and mobility before pain or injury forces the issue

  • Performance — helping athletes and active people move more efficiently and avoid the injuries that come from imbalance or overuse

  • Alternative to surgery — for many conditions, PT is a proven first-line treatment, not a consolation prize

  • Chronic condition management — arthritis, diabetes, EDS, and other conditions all respond well to guided movement

  • Recovery — from surgery, injury, or simply time away from activity

Most states, including Maryland, allow direct access to physical therapy — meaning you don't need a physician referral to walk through our doors. If something feels off, you don't have to wait for a diagnosis to start getting help.

 What Makes Physical Therapy Work

Great physical therapy isn't about a stack of generic exercises told to you or handed to you on a sheet of paper. It's about a clinician who actually watches how you move, understands your specific goals — whether that's getting back on the tennis court, playing on the floor with your grandkids, or simply climbing stairs without pain — and adjusts your plan as you progress.

Opal provides personal, hands-on care.

This Year's Theme Repeats Itself: PT For Future Me

Each year, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) builds National PT Month around a national campaign, and this year's is the same as last years and it’s one we love: PT For Future Me.

The idea behind it is simple but powerful: the actions you take with your body today — the strength you build, the mobility you protect — shape how well you'll move five, ten, or even fifty years from now. Physical therapy isn't just something you turn to after an injury — it's a tool for building the strength, mobility, and independence that let you keep doing the things you love, at every stage of life, from childhood through your senior years.

A few things from the campaign worth knowing:

  • You don't need a physician's referral to see a physical therapist in most states, including Maryland — if something feels off, you can come straight to us.

  • PT isn't only for treating pain that's already here. It's just as valuable as a preventive, proactive part of your regular health routine — the same way you'd see a dentist before a toothache becomes a root canal.

  • Movement needs and goals shift across every life stage, and a good PT plan should shift with them — from youth sports and early-adulthood injury prevention, to managing the physical demands of parenting and career, to preserving strength and independence later in life.

For a deeper dive, APTA put together a genuinely useful PT For Future Me Patient Toolkit — it's a great resource if you want to understand how physical therapy can support you (or a family member) at your specific stage of life.

A Practice Built By Clinicians, For YOU, Our Patients

Opal Physical Therapy was founded on a simple belief: patients deserve care from experienced, engaged clinicians who are personally invested in their outcomes. We're privately owned and women- and mom-owned, with our clinical lead treating patients hands-on, every day, alongside our team. That's not a marketing line — it's how we structured the business from day one.

We also believe great care shouldn't be reserved for those who can pay out of pocket. We accept insurance plans, because access matters as much as quality.

Meet the People Behind the Care

This month, we're celebrating our incredible clinical team — the physical therapists who show up every day to help our community move better, recover faster, and feel more confident in their bodies. Physical therapy is, at its core, a relationship-driven profession, and we're proud of the relationships our team builds with every patient who walks through our doors.

 Celebrate With Us

Whether you're managing a nagging injury, recovering from surgery, chasing a performance goal, or simply want to move through life with more confidence, National Physical Therapy Month is a great reminder that you don't have to wait for things to get worse to get help.

If it's been a while since you've thought about your movement, your strength, or that ache you've been ignoring, October is as good a month as any to start.

Reach out to schedule an evaluation at any of our locations — we'd be honored to be part of your care and we appreciate your support because we know YOU have the CHOICE!

Opal Physical Therapy is a privately owned, women- and mom-owned outpatient practice serving Anne Arundel County. Our co-owner treats patients, every day.
